We had the privilege to see Michael Phelps (the most decorated Olympian of all time…in case you are wondering) to win his first individual gold medal at these games. He won the 200m individual medley …my favorite swimming race. Not too bad…I have to confess that while we were all very excited, he seemed pretty relaxed on the podium , like…I’ve done this so many times!
I read often on other blogs, newspapers etc. that the Olympics are the quintessence of nationalism. It might be true. Especially for some people, some countries. My country didn’t win any medals at the aquatic centre that night (any night, sadly). I stood to hear 4 times the hymn of a country I was not born in and I cheered athletes from placesthat I can barely point on a map. And I couldn’t be happier…. Is this bad?
A questi giochi abbiamo avuto l’onore di vedere vincere Michael Phelps la prima medaglia individuale di queste olimpiadi (l’uomo piu’ medagliato alle olimpiadi di sempre…nel caso vi steste domandando chi fosse). E nella mia gara di nuoto preferita, i 200 misti. Ad essere sincera, mentre noi eravamo tutti sovraeccitati sugli spalti, lui sul podio sembrava abbastanza…diciamo rilassato. Della serie…ormai ci sono abituato.
Piccola considerazione sui giochi: leggo in giro, su blog, riviste italiane e straniere, che le Olimpiadi sono la quintessenza del nazionalismo e quindi del fascismo. Non lo so, forse e’ vero. Soprattutto per certe persone e per certi paesi. Quella sera l’Italia non ha vinto nessuna medaglia all’aquatic centre (e nessun’altra sera di queste olimpiadi, purtroppo). Mi sono alzata 4 volte ad ascoltare l’inno di nazioni in cui sono nata e mi sono ritrovata ad incitare atleti che vengono da paesi che a mala pena a volte so indicare su una cartina. E non avrei potuto essere piu’ felice. E’ una cosa sbagliata?

- Men’s 200m backstroke final (Clary-Irie-Lochte)
- Women’s 200m breaststroke (Soni-Suzuki-Efimova). Soni broke the world record.
- Women’s 100m freestyle (Kromowidjojo-Herasimenia-Tang). Kromowidjojo made the olympic record
